11 km from Paroikia is the forested mountain village of Lefkes, built amphitheatrically at an altitude of 250m it rests right at the heart of the island and has breathtaking views of the neighbouring island of Naxos.
The village maintains the traditional Cycladic style unchanged by the influence of tourism: white washed houses and stone paths, squares and wells and clean, narrow marble streets. The impressive Cathedral of “Agias Triadas” (the Holy Trinity) stands right at the centre of the village.
Today Lefkes has a permanent population of approximately 800 residents. They are progressive and a significant influence to the cultural life of the island. There is an interesting Folk Museum in the village and just before the northern entrance to the village you can visit “Yria”, a ceramics and pottery workshop that has been in operation for 40 years. The owners, John and Virginia Kydoneios, create stunning earthen works inspired by the island’s local traditions. During the summer the local cultural society, also called Yria, organizes a festival with music, theatre performances and traditional dancing.
Lefkes offers hotels, rooms, cafés, and renowned taverns serving local delicacies. This village is the perfect destination for those whose ideal holiday includes peace and quiet.
