This village was given the mythological name of the daughter of the King of Aitolia, Evinos, as per Homer’s Illiad (verse I 555-564). Princess Marpissa was the “apple of discord” between the God Apollo and Idas, son of the King of Messinia.
Today the village Marpissa is built around a hillside, 40m above sea level and near the coast, 17km east of Paroikia. It is a lovely village with a mild climate, interesting architecture and layout, graphic windmills and beautiful structures from the 16th century such as the churches of “Aghios Demitrios”, “Messoporitissa”, “Evangelistria”, “Metamorphoses” and “Aghios Modestros” that house religious art treasures of inestimable value.
The primary religious festival in Marpissa is “The Metamorphoses of Our Saviour” on August 6th, many cultural events mark this occasion, and in the old town you will find taverns and coffee houses. Today Marpissa, comprised of the old town and the small communities of Piso Livadi and Dryos, is one of the six municipal regions of the City (Municipality) of Paros.
